Dragon Maths using Shapes

In math's today we were learning about how shapes can make things.

We were practicing our cutting skills and trying to work as a team to complete our mission.

We put on our math's eyes to see what we noticed about two pictures that Whaea Jaime put on the board.

There we circles and triangles some in orange yellow red and white. We found a new shape. A semi circle. 

We made up some basic fact equations using the shapes and colors, Like 2 red circles and 2 orange circles make 4 circles all together (2+2=4). 6  white triangles and 6 yellow triangles make 12 triangles.

Now for the fun part.

First we cut out the shapes

Next we arranged our shapes to match our dragon picture.

Then we glued them in place.

Our mission was to see which group could get their dragon as close to the example as possible. The Judge of our pictures was Whaea Deb.

Kayne's group looked like they had a tooth shaped nostril. 

Ezekai's group looked close but their nostrils were slightly off center.

This group had all the components.

And this group here had some teeth missing and we thought maybe it was a baby dragon.

It was decided that the winning team was Skyla and Liliani. 

This was a lot of fun. It was a very engaging activity and encouraged the groups to organize who would do what and how it would be done.

We are learning to build resilience through group work and this was definitely a challenge.
