Room 17 Gardening - Living world

When you look at this photo what do you see?

"What a mess!" Was our first thought, then we asked ourselves, what can we do?

"Let's tidy this up, we can rake the leaves, weed and turn over the dirt so we can plant some vegetables".

So we got stuck in and worked together. It took us two afternoons and one lunch time.

We worked really hard and now it looks like its as good as new. We are ready to plant.

We are going to keep updating our progress and share what we have learnt with you in our blog. Keep an eye out for our Gardening posts and let us know what your tips are and how you think we can improve our Maara.

Tuna and Takakau Week.

In week nine everyone at Kawakawa primary school celebrated tuna and takakau week.
All us students get to make a takakau or we can try to catch a tuna.

We had three days to catch a tuna and each day we had to weigh them to see how heavy they were and measured them to see how long they were.

On Thursday we brought our takakau in and the parents judged them. They were judged on taste, presentation and texture.

Aubree made a takakau in the school logo of the Kawakawa leaf. Tegan decorated hers with matariki stars and Haylin's was a flat round circle.

Aubree won first place for her takakau and Haylin came second. Qwayde and Kailah won first place for the heaviest tuna. It was 5kgs and 86.5cm long. Everyone was presented with their certificates in the school assembly over at the hall.

After that we all sat with our whanau and friends and ate our hangi.

Tuna and takakau week was so much fun. We are proud of everyone who put in a big effort to catch tuna and make takakau.

Meeting our Pen Pals

Our patrick starfish reading group have finally been able to hang out with their senior pen pals.

After three weeks of writing letters back and forth, asking questions about interests, family, pets and hobbies our tamariki have discovered many things they have in common and things that are so far from their own daily lives that its made meeting each other extremely exciting.

Whaea Jaime: How do you feel now that you know so much more about your pen pals?

Nico: I feel really good that we know more about each other,
Aubree: I think its amazing we like and do a lot of the same things.

Waekamania: I still feel a bit shy, but Satyn is so nice.

Cyber Smart lesson

We have been learning about our digital footprint and how to take care of our devices.

We talked about our digital footprint. When we post  things online we can track where we have been.
We learned that when we are holding our devices we need to hug them to our chest to keep them safe.
We need to put our devices on sensible surfaces.
We need to keep our devices away from food and our drinks.
We watched a video clip that encouraged us to do the same when we get our devices.
We could do a video like this too.

Patrick Starfish Reading Group

Noah - We read a story called Pen Pals. It was about some kids writing to pen pals that are a lot older then them. Aubree - Whaea Jaime asked us if we wanted to write letters to other students in the school and tell them a little bit about us, and maybe learn a bit about them.

We didn't know who would get our letters or if they would write back. - Nico

When we got our response letters it was cool. - Elijah.

I wish we could keep writing letters this has been fun. - Waekamania.

Huge thank you to the students of room 5 who participated and wrote back to our tamariki they were super excited to get letters and learn a bit more about you.

New members to room 17

Today has been a super busy day - It started with a powhiri for a new student Keyanah. She played with the play dough, the lego and drew on the white board with the Patrick starfish reading group. She really liked to play with the tamariki taping many of them to go with her to the next activity. The class has done so well to welcome her to our class. - Whaea Jaime

This is Matua Nick. He is a new teacher aid in room 17. So far 2 of our reading groups have worked with him. (Spongebob) Darryl - "He is so much fun". Ridge - "He is helping us with our letters and sounds".

Today Matua Nick worked with Mr Crabs reading group. Qwayde - "We read our book to him and he helped us" Ani - "We played go fish". Haylin - "He is really cool to work with".

Our class is getting so big. Its cool we like it. Its fun to make new friends.

In week 2 room 17 won class of the week. We try really hard to line up nicely in the mornings ready to go to Taumata and sit up for our morning karakia, mihimihi, waiata and school notices. Our morning began with a powhiri for three new students and one started in our class. Her name is Ebony. Welcome to our class Ebony. Aubree - "It was cool to show Ebony around our school, I hope she likes it".
This weeks award is especially rewarding because the trophy now comes with a prize for us to share as a class. We will be watching throughout the week for the next class to receive this trophy and we will fill it with goodies too. Nico - "We had a really good day".
This blog was written by the students of room 17 as apart of a shared writing lesson. Please leave us a comment so that we know you are following what we are doing in our class.
